LONDON, April 3, 2025 — A cargo ship that collided with an oil tanker in British waters has been towed to Aberdeen for a comprehensive assessment.
The collision between the Portuguese-flagged "Solong" and the American-registered "Stena Immaculate" occurred off the coast of East Yorkshire on March 10. The impact caused explosions and a fire on the "Solong," which was extinguished after several days.
The severely damaged "Solong" arrived in Aberdeen on March 29 for evaluation by maritime inspectors. One crew member was presumed dead, and the ship's captain has been charged with manslaughter by gross negligence.
The "Stena Immaculate," carrying jet fuel, remained at sea for cargo transfer before being towed for inspection. Environmental concerns were raised due to the hazardous cargoes, but damage appears less severe than feared.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the cause. The maritime industry is closely monitoring the outcome for potential safety regulations.
